Preserving the old ways

As a huge Simon Pegg fan, I feel almost ashamed to admit it.

But it's taken me this long to get round to watching 'Hot Fuzz'.

But they say good things come to those that wait and in this case it couldn't be more true. If you've seen 'Spaced' and 'Shaun Of the Dead', you'll pretty know what to expect. A heady mix of pop culture references, high brow humour, low brow jokes and blockbuster parodies. All linked together with fast editing, great performances and a big name British cast. True, it takes about 10 minutes to hit it's stride but once it does it's prety amazing. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are as great as always giving not only hilarious perfromances but also incredibly rounded characters. While Timothy Dalton is a revelation, oozing comic book villain but never overstepping the line into ridiculous. Give it a few more views and I even may declare it better than 'Shaun Of The Dead'. Plus, it has a pretty damn great soundtrack. If you ignore the presence of The Fratellis. So I thought this morning I would share a couple of tracks from it.

First up, Jon Spencer and The Elegant Too bring it with some dirty, funky, dangerous blues that's manages to fuse Jon Spencer's trademark sound of crunching guitars and howling vocals to a hip hop style beat. Great stuff.

Next up, Eels with an absolutely stonking song. There's some action from the film thrown in for good measure but really, it's all about the song which is a bluesy kind of song with a repetitive hook that just seems to get bigger and bigger.

And we finish with a classic slice of British music from the '60s wherein The Kinks dissect village life in all its rose tinted spectacle minutiae.

Anyway, enough of this, listen to the music then go buy the film. I insist!
