It seems so obvious, you wonder why no-one’s done it before.
Maybe they already have.
But not with as much style or energy as the Vivian Girls. They’ve taken the girl band vocals of the 50s and 60s, updated it with the vigour, force and urgency of punk and then smoothed off the edges with some hazy shoegazery lushness. Kind of like ram raiding Phil Spector’s Wall Of Sound and then using one of the broken bricks to smash your speakers in. It’s a thrilling and rather astonishing sound. Simple, sweet, gorgeous melodies, delivered with a rush of adrenaline and a ton of attitude. As though the girlfriends of a 50’s biker gang got bored watching the macho posturing and posing of their men, nicked their leather jackets and decided to show them how it’s really done.
In truth however, Vivian Girls are a three piece who, almost inevitably, hail from New York. Most of their songs clock in under 3 minutes and their debut self titled album was released in October and you can find out more here.
